[The Wisdom of a Distracted Mind] Ooops...

Now, I kind of like Dan Abrams. Sometimes, I think he's a bit of a dick, but he does bring up an interesting idea by attempting to combine the latest knocking up of one of the Spears' clan with the colossal failure of "abstinence-only" sex-education.

I don't know... I'm not sure a correlation can really be drawn between the baby Spears' pregnancy and abstinence-only education. However, the thing that really gets my attention is the mindless, blonde-haired pile of crazy, religious fluff, Wendy Wright, and her absolute oblivious approach to this discussion. Now, there's a woman literally packed to the rafters with her denial of the simple fact that the policy she's gurgling on about doesn't freakin' work, and unless chaining some horny teenager to a radiator is part of an abstinence-only education, I really don't think it will ever work.

Still, Wendy Wright is a peach to look at... I can picture her loaded up on Xanax and Prozac and singing in the kitchen while baking pies and cookies for her precious, planned brood like a fine, submissive, Christian broad with a saccharine smile plastered upon her well-medicated face.

Still, I think this is an interesting discussion, nonetheless.

  1. Dan Abrams didn't like what Wendy was saying, and he hardly let her talk.    You didn't like what she was saying and called her a mindless, blonde-haired pile of crazy, religious fluff.     Just because you don't agree with what someone is saying, doesn't mean they are completely wrong.   If teaching abstinence (even abstinence only) saves even a small percentage of teens (though I believe it could be more than just a small percentage) from becoming parents way too early, then it's worth supporting.    I can't help but wonder if it were someone who didn't have religious ties pushing abstinence, you and the likes of Abrams wouldn't discount what was said so quickly, nor so harshly.

  2. Meg, it's been proven time and time again that abstinence-only programs do not work, and it's well past the time for America to simply abandon them.  Simply telling kids not to have sex is never going to be enough, and the fact that you are willing to see a success if one or two kids are not having sex beneath this abstinence program while foolishly neglecting the remainder of the class shows that you are more a part of the problem than any sort of solution.

Aside from that, if you're getting sex-education advice from some mindless religious tome written by itinerant sheep and goat herders, you might want to try to adjust your thinking to accommodate 21st Century life in a secular nation as the Bible is simply the least informative place to be looking for such information.

To make matters worse, Wendy Wright IS completely wrong.  So, scolding me for not agreeing with her because I "think" she's wrong is false.  The facts simply do not support her argument.  Her reality is a complete and total delusion.

I hate to break it to you, but teenagers are going to have sex, Meg.  If you think they're not, and if you think that some sort of religious indoctrination and spiritual browbeating is going to keep teenagers from having sex, then you're an idiot.

I'd rather give my kids all the information available regarding sex and stress upon them the importance of protection if they decide to have sex rather than just simply saying "don't do it."
