Fish Fry!

Yummy.     Now, I have an unholy affinity for Swedish Fish.  And, I'm not talking about my desire to gulp down herring or anything silly like that (though that can be good sometimes).  I'm talking about the delightful little red candy fishes that seem to find their way into my mouth everytime they come within reach.  Seriously, I've been known to toss down a school of these little guys for breakfast.  It's madness really.

To make matters worse, another thing I enjoy is absolutely anything deep fried (I've got the Lipitor prescription to prove this too), and as a result of that, I found myself driving along today thinking about whether or not it would be a good idea to deep-fry my beloved Swedish Fish.  I mean, what's better than a nice crispy shell hiding a sweet, ooey-gooey, molten mass of sugary lava?

However, I couldn't decide whether I wanted to have them beer-battered, like fried fish is usually prepared here in Milwaukee, or perhaps something lighter and more exotic along the lines of a tasty, crispy tempura.  I mean, I need a change.  I've been going the Sushi-route with these fish ever since I started eating them when I was three years old, and these days, with everybody deep-frying anything they can get their hands on, why shouldn't I investigate a few culinary alternatives?

Unfortunately, I don't have a deep fryer.  My friends and family care far too much about me to ever purchase one as a gift for me, and I do have enough self-control not to run out and buy one myself.  They frighten me.  And not because of having a vat of boiling oil perched upon my countertop just waiting to spill all over the place.  No.  They frighten me because I have this overwhelming and suicidal desire to beer-batter and deep-fry a bacon-wrapped Whopper with Cheese with extra mayo and maybe a fried egg on top.

Anyway, I know I'm not alone out there with this wicked, food weirdness.  In fact, here's a rather disturbed person in Michigan and his delightful recipe for chocolate-covered bacon (unfortunately, it isn't deep fried).

  1. Confession: I enjoy "S'Mores" a lot more if the marshmallow is replaced by crispy hot bacon. Graham cracker--chocolate--BACON!

  2. Hi !!!!!!!!!

I had to come and leave you a comment because I really enjoyed this entry in your journal. I can't say that I have ever had Swedish Fish we don't have any of these in Georgia. I also can't say that I am a fan of Sushi although my family likes Sushi I am NOT. Of course we do have a Burger King here and I often get Whoppers with cheese and extra maybo and extra pickles. I haven't had a Whopper with an egg on top of course I never thought to ask for that. Your not the only one with this wicked food weirdness.

  3. I love Swedish Fish too, but I don't think I could handle the deep frying thing.

You need to stay far far away from anything that comes close to being fried!  Your heart must look like a giant globula of fat!  hee

Stick with the sushi swedish fish!  It's safer!  *winks*

  4. Jackie,

My heart's pretty much just pumping butter and bacon grease these days.  Plus, I tan like a Peking duck.  Nice and crispy.

  7. This post reminded me about a new journal I've recently come across, though I can't remember where I first found reference to it. If it was through you, ignore this silly lapse. But if it wasn't, you've gotta check out The Quest For Bacon ( http://qwmaine.blogspot.com/ ). This entry is what yours reminded me of: http://qwmaine.blogspot.com/2006/06/total-total-total-hearsay.html

  9. Good Mornin' Dan!

I have heard of deep-fried twinkies . . . so really I think you should give the deep fried Swedish Fish a whirl. I mean worst case senario you save yourself from a heart attack and have to eat them plain. It's worth a try, and since it is festival season just take your bag-o-Swedish Fish with you and ask to drop it in with the funnel cakes, I am sure the carnies wont mind. :-D

  10. I've heard of chicken fried bacon though I haven't given it a try...it's supposed to be scrumptuous.  But I love just about anything fried too.   If they can deep fry mac & cheese why not swedish fish. Though I have never had a Swedish fish. Nor a Finnish fish for that matter.
    It' good to be home.

  11. Hi ! I had to find this entry because tonight my mom, my oldest niece and I went to Walmart where I picked up a box of these Swedish Fish and I bought some to try. I couldn't believe it I went in the candy aisle and I saw a box of these and I thought of your entry about them so I had to buy them. I laughed as I carried them up to the register. I couldn't believe I was looking at them in the candy aisle at Walmart. I had never seen these until your journal so thanks for introducing me to something new. Please keep me posted of such wonderful treats as this. I'll be waiting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
