A Lone Tree...

I'm just killing some time before a friend of mine swings over and drags me out for his birthday, and I thought I'd scribble a bit about a picture I kind of like.

The original photo

A while back, I posted my Foggy Day photos, and I got an interesting question in my email today asking about the lone tree in the fog and just how much touching-up I had done to the picture before posting it.  So, above is the original, and here's the touched up version:

The touched-up picture.

Anyway, after having to prove that I didn't do much to the photo by sending the original to this person, I was obviously forced to look at them both again.  As odd as it sounds, they both have a uniquely different "feel" to them.  The original picture is kind of spooky with a sort of "Hello!  I'm just hanging out by this tree here in the fog waiting for some zombies to come and eat my brains" feel to it.

The second picture seems much warmer to me.   It's like a hazy , super-smoggy, summer sunset.

How about you?  Do these seem like two completely different pictures to you?

  1. It's funny that you described the second one as 'warmer' because that's exactly what I thought as I scrolled down.  A lone tree is also a favorite subject of mine when photographing.  Actually a 'lone' anything!  A rock, a leaf, a branch, a structure...  WHATEVER!  I wonder why this appeals to some of us?

    Both pictures are fabulous, anyway!

  2. You did a good job describing them. I like the first one best. The second one is too dark for me. I'm scared of the dark. :)

  4. They sure do.  The first one looks like Wisconsin.  The second one looks like L.A.  =)   But I like 'em both.  Very much.   Tina http://journals.aol.com/onemoretina/Ridealongwithme

  5. I prefer the second one, I think it has a more eerie feel than the original. B.

  6.   In the second picture, the ground is almost invisible, as is the point where it meets the sky, which gives, to my mind, the picture a more eerie feel. Almost lonely. As well, the enhanced contrast has produced a bit of a solarization effect around the sun, which makes it all seem otherworldly. I like it.

  7. I don't know if they seem like two diff ones. You shouldn't have told us they were the same one then asked.  I prefer the top one.

  8. Ansel Adams would be very proud.
I lean toward the bottom one, it's mystical because it makes my mind create a ground and a sky and I have to connect the two.
    Well done~

  9. I prefer the original, actually; and yes, I do get the idea that they're two very different pictures.  I think I like the way the fog is more prominant on the horizon in the first one, and there is such a fluid, melting of the shades from the hazy sun on down to the ground in the first one.  The changes in shading in the second one are too abrupt.  But both are gorgeous!

  10. P. S.  I also like the expanse of ground showing in the first one.  I really, REALLY like that picture, can you tell?  I would frame it and hang it on the wall if it were a painting!

  11. I like that the top photo is more open and fluid, but it does give a sense of lonliness whereas the second is a bit more warm and inviting.

  12. I like the second one because the colors and textures make me think of chocolate and leather which are both aphrodisiacs. And the sky is liquidy and prettily striated, not smoggy. I like it. Let's have a picnic there. You dust off those leather chaps and I'll bring the chocolate.

  13. Are you sure you want my opinion?? Hmmm...k, from an indians point of view:
The top picture represents hope, dawning of a new day, open fresh promising. The bottom one is darker, kinda calming days end , a greeting to the night. I would love to sit under the top one and watch the fog slowly disperse and welcome in the morning. The scent of dew in the air. Oh, I'm longing for that moment now. See what you got started. LOL!! I absolutely loved the pictures of the fog. Eerie and mystical at the same time. Love Ya Indigo
