[The Wisdom of a Distracted Mind] Correction!

Wow.... I thought yesterday was Pancake Day. However, as it turns out, today is actually Pancake Day!

Here's the official International Pancake Day website.

And, here's the IHOP National Pancake Day website.

Apparently, there's some controversy with Pancake Day as IHOP doesn't want to share this Fat Tuesday tradition with the myriad of bungling political primaries going on under the auspices of Super Tuesday. As a result, a schism has been created in the land, and we now have TWO pancake days (Today, Feb 5th, and Next week, Tuesday, Feb 12th).

Here's the IHOP press release:
About National Pancake Day
February 12, 2008

Known also as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, National Pancake Day dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products…hence the name Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday.

In 2008, Fat Tuesday falls on February 5, which also happens to be Super Tuesday, on which a record number of states will hold their Presidential primaries. In the interest of embracing the democratic process, IHOP has postponed its celebration of National Pancake Day by one week, and will give away free pancakes on February 12.

Since beginning its National Pancake Day celebration in 2006, IHOP has raised nearly one million dollars to support charities in the communities in which it operates. With your help, we hope to raise $750,000 for Children̢۪s Miracle Network in 2008!

What does this mean for you?

Well, not only do you get to violate some arcane and silly Catholic tradition of starving yourself for forty days, you also get to eat more pancakes.

Enjoy!

  1. I had a feeling you were a day off on the pancake thing, bc my church (yeah I'm Christian, lol) has a pancake supper every year. And thats today. Wahoo!
Mmmm.... I think I may go make some right now and have them for both breakfast and dinner. Now what should I give up for Lent?...

  2. Oh, so I get to do this again NEXT week, too?

I made pancakes for my daughter, as typically we stuff ourselves with them on Shrove Tuesday NIGHT (and she didn't want to go to her dad's tonight, but, hey, that's the schedule and she'll be FINE), and (fake) sausaged we both like, but now?  We get to eat them again NEXT week, too?

I suppose I should think of something to do, or not do, for Lent.  Hmmmm.  And, it's supposed to be a change.  So, saying I'll go celibate won't work, cuz, well, dating life hasn't exactly been too exciting.  Not that I'm Catholic, but usually, I like to take some time for reflection.

FREE pancakes?  Can you pass the syrup, please?  (It IS 100% maple, yes?)
