[The Wisdom of a Distracted Mind] Drinks at Nine.

Here's an insect getting his drink on.

Drinks at Nine.

He's kind of doing a keg-stand, so you know this bee is a hardcore douchebag who learned how drink in a frat-house basement.

By the way, I have not been able to figure out two things:

First, I don't know why the inside of my birdbaths (there are three in the yard) turn red. My guess is that there's too much iron in the water here in Milwaukee (thankfully, I drink beer instead of water).

Second, the water in this particular birdbath always gets a little "foamy" for some reason. I mean, even if I clean it and scrub out all the red stuff, a short time after filling it, it comes back. So, either someone's peeing in the tub, or... well... I've got beer coming out of my garden hose (which would mean my dreams have finally started to come true).

In other news, this shot was taken with my dandy new lens. It's a Sigma 70-300mm APO number, and it was really cheap, but I think it's a pretty decent little lens. Of course, I'd love to have the Nikon version of this lens with the vibration reduction and all the other bells and whistles, but that hunk of glass was hell and gone outside of my price range.

However, after taking a handful of shots with this new lens, I've come to the conclusion that this lens is the next best thing to the Nikon. And, since none of you were willing to give me the fat wad of smelly money I needed to make up the difference, I had to go with the next best thing.

I hope you're happy. I'm sure you're all going to get a stern memo about that.

Anyway, I'm off to the park to see if I can't put this thing through its paces.

  1. After pondering your red water, I couldn't help but to wonder what the birds and bees might do if you filled your bird bath with red Jello.
Oh, speaking of Jello, I'm going into the hospital on Monday morning for surgery on a brain anuerysm the doctors found a while back. So, any of my old bloggin' buds who might be reading this...keep me in your thoughts come Monday. Hope you don't mind me using your blog, Dan.

  2. I'm imagining little slurping noises in my mind, like the sounds Sheeba makes at his water dish.

We have high iron content in our water (we have well water), too, but it turns things orange, not red. What are your birdbaths made out of? Sounds like there's some kind of strange chemical reaction going on....

So I guess the next thing to worry about is the plague of giant, mutated, beer-drinkin' bees with an attitude coming out of Milwaukee.

  3. Beth,

This bird bath is brass, one's concrete, and the other, I think, it some sort of super plaster (though it might be concrete as well).  They all get this sort of weird, red thing.  It might be algae, but I don't know.  I'm not touching the stuff.

    Tee,

I'll be keeping you in my thoughts, and I hope the surgery goes well and wonderful.  I know if someone started poking around in my head, they'd just find a lot of dust and probably a few spiders and cobwebs.

It's no problem using my blog.  I'll try to post an entry either later today or tomorrow to pass the news around the community.

Other than that, didn't Sharon Stone just have something like that done?

I hope you don't start making crappy movies and insulting the Chinese when you come out of the hospital.

    Good luck!

  4. I was wondering what the heck it was drinking.  It almost looks like raspberry preserves.  Hmmm if all of yours get that color.

Wishing your commenter well on her brain aneurysm surgery.  I know how tricky that can be.
