[The Wisdom of a Distracted Mind] Calm Down...

So, the folks in Malaysia are hoppin' mad at the illustration of Jesus seen here.

I think Christians are desperately trying to catch up the Muslims on the insignificant outrage front. I mean, come on. It's a freakin' picture. There's no need to shut down a newspaper for a whole month while its employees are forced to starve. Personally, from what I gather from the Bible, I don't think that's what Jesus would do. I think the J-Man would see something like this and say, "You know? I'm really more a wine guy than a Bud drinker. I look like I'm going to a NASCAR race here, instead of my one true love that is the Kenny-G concert experience. I likes me some sax."

Anyway, my favorite quote from the furious Malaysian Christian group is this:

So when Tamil-language newspaper, Makkal Osai, published a picture on its front page apparently showing Jesus smoking and drinking it was bound to cause offence.

Christian groups said that although the Jesus of the Bible was a compassionate figure - who turned water into wine, shared a flagon with his disciples at the Last Supper and mixed with tax collectors and prostitutes - action should still be taken.

So, it's okay to print a biblically acceptable and accurate portrait of Jesus sharing a bottle of Thunderbird with a bunch of whores and IRS agents, but god forbid Jesus smokes and drinks Budweiser. Oh, the outrage!

I guess now we'll have to give the Christians a soft pat on the head as we tell them "there, there... We're sorry you're always getting picked on and persecuted. We'll throw those evil, mean newspaper people out on the street so they have no money. Will that make you feel better?"

  1. Actually we're not hopping mad. The newspaper apologised for the mistake, many consider the mistake to be what it was and the apology sincere and have moved on.

Problem is, of course, that the authorities have suspended the newspaper and this did get some Christians (amongst others) hopping mad.

  2. There's always somebody who can't wait to stir the pot with something like this picture .... and there's no shortage of outraged and offended folks who fall for it.  Never ceases to amaze ... or amuse ...me.  Tina
