Those Crazy Christians...

Sometimes I have to wonder about Christians.  I mean, I can't be the only one who sees the hypocrisy of a Christian-based video-game based upon the premise of "Convert or Die."

"It's an incredibly violent video game," said [Clark Stevens, co-director of the Campaign to Defend the Constitution].  "Sure, there is no blood. (The dead just fade off the screen.) But you are mowing down your enemy with a gun. It pushes a message of religious intolerance. You can either play for the 'good side' by trying to convert nonbelievers to your side or join the Antichrist."
Sounds good.  It's a "Christian" video-game where you run around gunning down bad guys who ally themselves with the Antichrist.  But, just who are these "bad guys?"
The enemy team includes fictional rock stars and folks with Muslim-sounding names, while the righteous include gospel singers, missionaries, healers and medics. Every character comes with a life story.

When asked about the Arab and Muslim-sounding names, [Left Behind Games' president, Jeffrey] Frichner said the game does not endorse prejudice. But "Muslims are not believers in Jesus Christ" -- and thus can't be on Christ's side in the game.

"That is so obvious," he said.

Yes.  It's obvious.  Let's create a video game which openly advocates religious intolerance.

The ironic thing is that many Christians scream about the hazards of games like Grand Theft Auto, and their ability to warp the minds of our children to the point that they will embark on an uncontrolled car-stealing, hooker-beating killing spree.  However, now, Christians have created a game which could embrace many of the same complaints they had about the GTA series.

Of course, the only question I really have is what is the name of this rock-star killing, post-raptured, Christian Warrior?  Can we call him Mark David Chapman?

  1. Not everyone who believes is a hypocrite ... and it is true that the NEW AGE influx of 'Christians' has added modern day touches to its promotion to draw in youth.

I will not try to convert your thinking in the slightest as I believe that everyone is entitled to their freedoms.  I never ever try to push my belief onto anyone. I won't not discuss it if asked, but an evangelist I am not.  So, I'm not trying to bust your balls (OMG, a Christian woman just said that!) or anything ...

I do agree the violent nature of a video game such as you described is along the same lines as what we are 'so called fighting against' in the middle east right now. Religious war ... sure it's historical and now even current ... but really what's the point in all of it?

I can't PROVE their is a GOD ... but I know that when I live against my moral grain it reflects in my life.  True there are a lot a lot a lot of people who are good and decent and kind that are non-believers ... I'm not perfect by any stretch of the imagination.  Fact is, no body is ... and I really appreciate your sense of humor regardless of your beliefs.

I simply learned to take what I need and overlook the rest when it comes to life in general.  I think that no matter what there will always be divisions of peoples and thier opinions.  The country we live in was founded on the freedoms and I think it simply has gotten out of control - and that's really more than I should have said.  Guess it just touched a nerve ..

  2. Mark David Chapman...good one. So, when can I see some Crusade or Witch Hunt games to go with this garbage? It figures that WalMart will sell this hater crap but refuses to sell music unless "fuck" is bleeped out.

  3. "players lose "spirit points" every time they gun down nonbelievers rather than convert them. They can earn spirit points again by having their character pray"

I especially loved that part of the article.  Thats teaching the kiddies~~You can whack someone, buts it's all good if you pray about it afterward.

    Silly Hypocrisy.

  4. Agreeing with most of what, dag, can't pull up his comment while writing mine, the first commentor wrote.   Promotion of religious and racial intolerance, gunning them down? yikes, is NOT something this Christian agrees with.   I know that a lot of books promote good vice evil, but the ones I"m aware of, the evil characters are truly evil.   I'm sorry to hear this program is out and available.  -- Robin

  6. What?!?  Are you telling me it's unChristian to go around killing Muslims, rock stars and people who refuse to believe as you?

I mean, why shake the dust from your sandals and move on when you can just gun down those pesky free-thinkers and pray for more "spirit points?"'

  7. A fundamentalist is a fundamentalist is a fundamentalist. But do me a favor and avoid lumping us all in with the crazies. I mean, after all, I have to wonder about those skeptics and athiests who make all those first person shooter games that promote violence and gore. Blah, blah, blah.

Anytime we label one group with generalizations we just weaken our argument. I'm more likely to support an argument like this (and I do think it's wrong to make a Christian game promoting violence), if the argument deals with the specific population of fundamentalists who believe/support/promote this kind of product.
